On Saturday, June 10th, FICO Eataly World hosted a G7 Environment pre-meeting and conference titled ""Innovative Food Waste Approaches"" between Italy and the United States. The Italian Minister for the Environment Gian Luca Galletti and the US Administrator of EPA Scott Pruitt shared both countries’ best practices along with the academic world and the most cutting-edge Italian and US companies taking an active role in terms of food waste reduction. In the background, alarming data provided by the UN showing that, nowadays, a third of food destined to human consumption is lost or wasted.
""In Italy - said Minister Gian Luca Galletti - awareness has grown and initiatives against food waste have increased. We carry out educational and cultural impact initiatives with restaurant owners, customers (as in the case of family bags), chefs, and Italian families who are asked to be more aware of their shopping and food keeping. Most importantly, - said Galletti – there is a growing willingness of the Italian business world, starting with big companies like FICO, to make production cycles more sustainable. Consolidating a culture against waste - Galletti concluded - is crucial for a Planet who has the moral duty to better distribute its resources among its inhabitants"".
""The EPA - emphasized Scott Pruitt - has a long history in promoting national dialogue among key stakeholders to find innovative ways to reduce food waste. Last November - continued the Administrator - the US Department of Agriculture and EPA announced the formation of the “US Food Loss and Waste Champions Partnership 2030”, bringing together businesses and organizations that have made a public commitment to reduce food loss and waste by 50% by 2030”.
The American delegation - including the United States Interim Ambassador, Kelly Degnan, and the US Consul General in Florence, Abigail Rupp - was welcomed by FICO’s CEO, Tiziana Primori, by Andrea Segré, President of CAAB and FICO Foundation, and CAAB's Director-General Alessandro Bonfiglioli. HERA - the leading Italian multiutility in environmental water and energy services (with its managing director Stefano Venier) - took part at the meeting, preceded by a business lunch and a visit to the park site. The chairman of Confindustria Emilia Romagna Alberto Vacchi and the chairman of Legacoop Bologna, Rita Ghedini were also present at the event. America was represented by ""Yum! Brands"", with Deputy Governor Jon Hixson and Ted Monk, Vice President of Sodexo North America for Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility. For the academic world, Callie Babbit, Professor at Golisano Institute for Sustainabiliy at Rochester Institute of Technology and Professor Andrea Segré of Bologna University and president of CAAB and FICO Foundation, always engaged with The Italian Ministry of the Environment in the fight against food waste.
At the end of the roundtable, the meeting ended with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding ""For Circular Economy at FICO Eataly World"" among FICO Eataly World, FICO Foundation, CAAB and Hera Group. The agreement provides for joint activities to enhance and promote a sustainable organization and management of the Park based on the principles of circular economy: an economy that creates new employment and benefits linked to resource and energy saving, reduction and valorization of waste (also thanks to food recovery), extending the life cycle of products, promoting good practices linked to environmental sustainability and protection.
